About Joel Swartz, MD

Joel Swartz was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, and received a B.S. degree in mathematics from the Ohio State University in 1971. Joel graduated George Washington University Medical School in Washington, DC in 1975. He completed his residency in diagnostic Radiology at the University of Michigan in 1979 and subsequently completed a fellowship in Neuroradiology at the University of Pennsylvania. He became CAQ certified in 1995 and again in 2005.

Joel was on the staff of the Medical College of Pennsylvania from 1981 to 1991 and became professor in the Department of Radiologic Sciences. In 1991, he was appointed chairman of the Department of Radiology at Germantown Hospital in Philadelphia, a position he held until 1999. During that time, he became interested in providing efficient remote interpretation of MR and CT images via teleimaging. This is currently his primary pursuit, and he is responsible for providing comprehensive interpretive services for numerous locations in several states.

Approximately 130 of Joel’s articles, mostly about the temporal bone, have been published. A text, Imaging of the Temporal Bone, co-authored with H. Ric Harnsberger of the University of Utah, was originally published in 1986, and the fourth edition is now in preparation. Joel has been a co-editor of the Seminars in Ultrasound, CT and MR since 1994.
